The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has put its planned protest against the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) on hold after receiving assurances from the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) regarding the release of withheld WASSCE results.
The demonstration, originally scheduled for February 25, was meant to pressure WAEC into releasing results that had been either canceled or withheld, leaving many students in uncertainty over their university admissions and academic future.
However, a last-minute meeting between NUGS, WAEC officials, and GES led to a commitment from WAEC, prompting the student union to suspend its plans.
According to an official statement release today, WAEC have promised to release all outstanding results by March 1, 2025.
Speaking to ABC News, NUGS President Daniel Botwey explained the decision, emphasizing the role of the GES Director-General in securing WAEC’s promise.
“We have had extensive engagement with the Ministry of Education as well as the Ghana Education Service. At the meeting, we had the Head of WAEC Ghana, and we were able to get the assurance we needed,” he stated.
He further insisted that their trust in WAEC’s commitment is largely due to the GES Director-General’s intervention. “It is at the assurance of the DG that we are taking the word of WAEC,” Botwey revealed.
Despite this temporary resolution, concerns remain about WAEC’s track record of exam leaks, result delays, and administrative inefficiencies, which have fueled demands for urgent reform.
Education stakeholders argue that WAEC must undergo structural changes to enhance transparency and efficiency in result processing.
