The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has made a bold move to strengthen the technical foundation of the Black Stars by appointing experienced German tactician Winfried Anton Schafer as Technical Advisor.
The appointment comes after an in-depth evaluation of the Black Stars’ performance in last year’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
Schafer will work hand-in-hand with Head Coach Otto Addo to build a robust and competitive team. Beyond this role, Schafer will also take on responsibilities as the GFA’s Director of Football, guiding the association’s strategic planning and developmental programs.
Schafer’s coaching career spans over 40 years, including notable successes with national teams such as Cameroon, Thailand, and Jamaica. His club management portfolio features European teams like Borussia Monchengladbach, Karlsruher SC, VfB Stuttgart, and Borussia Berlin, alongside stints in the Middle East with clubs in the UAE and Qatar.
A highlight of Schafer’s career remains his remarkable achievement with Cameroon, leading them to AFCON glory in 2002. His ability to craft winning teams and inspire players on the international stage has earned him global recognition.
The GFA is confident that Schafer’s expertise, combined with Otto Addo’s leadership, will breathe new life into the Black Stars as they gear up for future competitions, including the next AFCON and World Cup campaigns.
