The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development has announced that the 2025 Closed Fishing Season will begin on July 1, with inshore fleets observing a one-month break and industrial trawlers grounded for two months.
Sector Minister Shama Emelia Arthur revealed that artisanal fishers will be exempt from this year’s closure but must continue observing the mandatory Tuesday fishing holidays and refrain from engaging in illegal practices.
The Minister stressed that the policy aligns with Ghana’s broader fisheries strategy aimed at replenishing ocean stock.
She added that District Assemblies and independent monitors will track compliance and assess the ecological impact of the exemption to guide future decisions.
