Google’s latest update introduces Twi voice search, opening digital doors for millions of Ghanaian speakers to access Google’s services in their native language.
This development, facilitated by Google’s AI Research Center in Accra, enables users to search, type, and translate seamlessly using Twi on Google Voice Search, Gboard’s talk-to-type, and Google Translate.
Alex Okosi, Managing Director of Google Africa, highlighted the significance, noting that this addition will “make a difference to over 300 million more people across the continent,” enhancing their ability to interact naturally with the web through voice.
Joining languages like Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo, Twi is among 15 African languages recently supported by Google as part of its mission to expand access.
Google’s President for Europe, Middle East, and Africa, Matt Brittin, echoed this commitment, describing the initiative as a “key landmark” in Africa’s digital journey.
