President John Mahama has announced the appointment of new Acting Service Chiefs for the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) as part of a leadership restructuring effort.
The changes, which take effect from March 24, 2025, are aimed at strengthening the nation’s defense capabilities and ensuring operational excellence.
The newly appointed officers include Brigadier General William Agyapong as Acting Chief of the Defence Staff, Brigadier General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu as Acting Chief of Army Staff, Commodore Godwin Livinus Bessing as Acting Chief of Naval Staff, Air Commodore Eric Agyen-Frempong as Acting Chief of Air Staff, and Brigadier General Glover Ashong Annan as Acting Chief of Staff.
Their appointments are subject to consultation with the Council of State, as required by law.
During a meeting at the Flagstaff House, President Mahama expressed his appreciation to the outgoing Service Chiefs, led by Chief of the Defence Staff General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, for their dedication and service to the country.
He emphasized that the new leadership is expected to build on past achievements and implement strategic reforms to enhance national security.
“These appointments are necessary to ensure the continuous strengthening of our Armed Forces, and I have full confidence in their ability to lead with distinction,” Mahama stated.
The restructuring reflects the administration’s commitment to modernizing Ghana’s military operations and addressing emerging security challenges.
