Edith Dzigbordi Baku has called for greater accountability, stronger institutions, and equal application of the law to ensure that Ghana’s freedom is matched by justice and responsibility.

According to Ms. Baku, although Ghana enjoys democratic freedoms, freedom without accountability can create challenges for society.

She explained that true freedom should not mean allowing individuals to act without consequences, stressing that freedom must go hand in hand with justice, responsibility, discipline, and respect for the rights of others.

Ms. Baku expressed concern that Ghana’s laws and institutions do not always operate with the speed, fairness, and consistency required to effectively address wrongdoing.

She argued that when citizens believe that misconduct will not attract serious consequences, it can encourage corruption, dishonesty, abuse of power, and other forms of negative behaviour.

However, she cautioned against responding to these challenges by restricting people’s freedoms.

Instead, she called for stronger justice systems and institutions capable of protecting citizens’ rights while ensuring that individuals are held accountable for their actions.

“Freedom and Justice must work together,” Ms. Baku said, explaining that freedom gives citizens their rights while justice ensures that those rights are protected and that no individual is above the law.

She called for fairly enforced laws, independent and effective institutions, responsible leadership, civic education, and a culture of accountability in which every citizen, regardless of wealth or social status, is treated equally under the law.

Ms. Baku said these measures are essential if Ghana is to achieve sustainable development and build a society where freedom is accompanied by responsibility and leadership is matched by accountability.

She further urged Ghanaians to ensure that the country’s national motto, “Freedom and Justice,” goes beyond words on the national coat of arms and becomes a reality experienced by every citizen.

She said she wants Ghanaians to understand her views and her plans for contributing to the development of the country.

“People need to know my thoughts and what I am planning to do in Ghana,” she said, describing herself as “your sister, Edith Dzigbordi Baku.”
