The newly sworn-in Government Statistician, Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu (PhD), has pledged to accelerate the rebasing of Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) data to improve its accuracy and relevance.
Dr. Iddrisu, who was officially appointed after serving in an acting capacity since April 2025, made the commitment during his address to President John Dramani Mahama and Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson.
He emphasized the importance of institutionalizing the GDP rebasing process every five years, as opposed to the current 10-year cycle, to align with global standards.

Dr. Iddrisu stated that the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) under his leadership would be a cornerstone for evidence-based governance.
“I accept this appointment not merely as an office, but as a solemn and sacred call to national duty,” he said, highlighting his commitment to place data at the heart of national transformation.
His vision includes a modern, agile, and technology-driven GSS that supports timely and informed decision-making at all levels of governance.
Beyond GDP, he also announced plans to fast-track the rebasing of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) to a three-year cycle from the current seven years, in order to improve inflation data.
Additionally, Dr. Iddrisu has promise to generate GDP statistics at the regional level, mirroring the approach used for CPI reporting. This, he explained, will allow for a clearer understanding of each region’s contribution to national output and support more targeted regional policy interventions.
