Senior Analyst at Global InfoAnalytics, Salam Nsiah, has cautioned that Hon. Haruna Iddrisu’s chances of leading the National Democratic Congress (NDC) into the 2028 presidential election may be undermined by regional considerations.
Speaking to ABC News GH on Tuesday, Nsiah noted that although Iddrisu currently leads the NDC flagbearer race with 27% support from general voters, internal party dynamics could shift the balance.
“His region might not favour him because of the argument that the next flagbearer should not come from the North again,” Nsiah explained, pointing to sentiments rising within the party base following Mahama’s presidency.
The July 2025 Global InfoAnalytics poll places Iddrisu ahead of Johnson Asiedu Nketia (26%) and Dr. Ato Forson (22%) in a tight three-way contest.
Among NDC supporters, Iddrisu garners 30%, while Asiedu Nketia holds 24%.
Nsiah emphasized that while Iddrisu remains a strong candidate, calls for regional diversity in leadership could influence party decisions.
“If that does not come in, we all know he has always been a strong candidate,” Nsiah acknowledged, though he cautioned the party might pivot toward newer or more strategically located candidates.
This assessment mirrors concerns also raised about the NPP leadership race, where frontrunner Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is ahead with 56% but still faces potential upsets in the coming months.
“There could be some twist in preference with the last five months left,” Nsiah said, reinforcing the notion that both parties’ flagbearer races remain fluid.
He emphasized that strong polling today does not guarantee victory tomorrow, especially as voter sentiments evolve and internal politics deepen.
