The New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership in the Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region has unanimously endorsed Solomon Kwame Asumadu, Chief Executive Officer of Owuo Mining Company, as the party’s parliamentary candidate for the upcoming by-election.
This decision comes as part of intensified internal preparations ahead of the Akwatia by-election scheduled for Tuesday, 2 September 2025.
The endorsement follows the passing of the incumbent MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi.
According to Akwatia Constituency Chairman, Nana Yaw Addo, Solomon Kwame Asumadu, who also serves as the constituency treasurer and is popularly known as “Owuo,” has emerged as the preferred choice of a majority of the party’s supporters and executives.
He further indicated that a formal statement will be released soon to confirm the party’s position.
In recent weeks, social media speculation had hinted at Mrs. Mavis Kumi, the late MP’s wife, as a likely candidate.
However, this was promptly refuted in a statement by the NPP’s Eastern Regional Chairman, Jeff Konadu, who described the reports as false and misleading.
Meanwhile, another faction within the constituency is lobbying for the return of former MP Mercy Adu Gyamfi, popularly known as Ama Sey, citing her unifying appeal and electoral strength.
