A fire outbreak at a major power installation in Akosombo has disrupted electricity supply to parts of Accra, prompting the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to announce scheduled outages across several communities.
In a statement, ECG attributed the development to “the fire outbreak at GRIDCo’s substation at Akosombo, which has reduced power supply to the Accra East Region.” The company said the situation has forced a temporary reduction in electricity distribution as engineers work to stabilise the system.

According to the notice, the planned power curtailment will take effect from 12:00 a.m to 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 28, 2026.
The disruption is expected to affect a wide stretch of the capital, including Adenta, Madina, East Legon, Osu, Kwabenya, Legon, Teshie, and parts of the Airport Residential Area. Other areas likely to experience outages include Kokomlemle, Accra New Town, Makola, and Atomic Junction.
ECG also listed additional locations such as Amrahia, Danfa, Oyibi, Bawaleshie, North Dzorwulu, and Burma Camp among those impacted. Key commercial centres like Accra Mall, Rawlings Circle, and Independence Square are also expected to be affected.
The company indicated that restoration efforts are dependent on improvements in power generation and system stability. “Affected customers should please note that immediately the generation profile improves, power supply will be restored,” the statement noted.
While authorities have yet to disclose the cause or full extent of damage from the fire, the incident has significantly constrained power flow within the Accra East Region, necessitating the temporary outages.
ECG apologised to customers for the inconvenience, stating, “ECG regrets the inconvenience caused to the affected customers.”
