African business magnate Aliko Dangote has praised President John Dramani Mahama for what he described as a significant turnaround in Ghana’s economic fortunes.
Mr Dangote said the improvement, achieved within a relatively short period, demonstrates the role of confidence and trust in economic management.
“I want to commend President Mahama for turning around the economy of Ghana in a very short time. This has actually shown that money follows trust,” he said.
He made the remarks at the “Accra Reset: Full Circle – Making Global Development Work Again” event in New York on Monday, September 21, 2026, held on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly.
According to Mr Dangote, Ghana was facing considerable economic difficulties when President Mahama assumed office, but the administration’s approach to addressing those challenges had helped rebuild confidence.
He stressed that the President’s efforts did not involve any extraordinary intervention but rather what he described as the implementation of the right measures.
“It wasn’t a very good case but when he came in, he didn’t do any magic. He is not a magician, but he did the right things and people really have a lot of trust in him,” he stated.
Mr Dangote further linked the renewed confidence in President Mahama to the improvement in Ghana’s economic outlook.
“That is why people have trust in him and that is why Ghana’s economy turned around,” he added.
He subsequently congratulated President Mahama on the progress made under his administration.
“Your Excellency, I must really congratulate you,” Mr Dangote said.
The comments come as the Mahama administration pursues its Resetting Ghana Agenda, which places emphasis on economic stabilisation, restoring investor confidence and improving the country’s fiscal position.
The government has pointed to developments including stronger foreign exchange reserves, improved fiscal performance, easing inflation and an appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi as indicators of the economy’s recent performance.
