The National Council of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially endorsed Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Member of Parliament for Effutu, as the new leader of the majority caucus in Parliament, marking a significant transition set to take effect today, Friday, February 23.

This significant change in leadership within the Majority Front Bench aligns with recent parliamentary interpretations and the Speaker’s ruling on the selection process, signaling a pivotal moment in the dynamics of parliamentary leadership.

The confirmation of the leadership changes occurred during a meeting convened by the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong, which brought together members of the Majority Caucus. During this meeting, recommendations from the National Executive Committee (NEC) regarding the leadership reshuffle were deliberated upon and ultimately endorsed.

Following the meeting, our sources indicate that the General Secretary presented the recommendations, along with a concurrence letter from the Majority Caucus, to the National Council. This approval took place during a meeting held at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, adhering to the provisions outlined in Order 6 of the Standing Orders of Parliament (2024), as interpreted by Speaker Alban SK Bagbin.

The Speaker’s interpretation underscores the importance of parliamentary caucuses in leadership selection, while also emphasizing the involvement of political parties to ensure a balance between internal party democracy and parliamentary norms.

The subsequent official announcement of the leadership changes on the parliamentary floor will be made by the Speaker of Parliament, following the receipt of a detailed letter from the NPP General Secretary confirming the changes. This will be followed by a farewell statement from the outgoing Majority Leader, Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, symbolizing the conclusion of his tenure.

In a ceremonial transition, Kyei Mensah Bonsu, accompanied by Adansi Asokwa MP, KT Hammond, will formally install Alexander Afenyo-Markin as the new Majority Leader. Afenyo-Markin will then deliver his inaugural address in this new capacity, outlining his vision and commitments for his leadership role.

According to the NEC’s recommendations, the newly appointed leadership team for the Majority Front Bench will be:

1. Majority Leader: Alexander Afenyo-Markin, MP for Effutu
2. Deputy Majority Leader: Patricia Appiagyei, MP for Asokwa
3. Majority Chief Whip: Frank Annoh Dompreh, MP for Nsawam/Adoagyiri
4. First Deputy Majority Chief Whip: Habib Iddrisu, MP for Tolon
5. Second Deputy Majority Chief Whip: Alex Tetteh Djornobuah, MP for Sefwi Akontombra

Following Afenyo-Markin’s statement, members from both sides of the House are expected to provide their contributions and backing, showcasing a united stance in Ghana’s parliamentary governance. The reshuffling, in line with the Speaker’s interpretation and the Standing Orders, marks a crucial step in ensuring that Ghana’s parliamentary leadership adheres to democratic and legal principles.

This transition in leadership is anticipated to herald a new era of parliamentary activities, with the NPP’s reinvigorated team prepared to steer the nation’s legislative affairs and drive forward national development initiatives.
