The Institute for Energy Security (IES) has urged the government to strengthen key energy institutions such as the Volta River Authority (VRA), Bui Power Authority, Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), and Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), rather than dismantling them.
This call follows the circulation of a draft bill proposing the merger of VRA with the Bui Power Authority and the combination of ECG with NEDCo.
The bill also suggests the establishment of an independent Thermal Power Authority.
Staff groups within the VRA have voiced their strong opposition to the draft bill, arguing that the proposed changes could have adverse effects on the country’s energy sector.
According to them, the restructuring poses significant risks not only to the future of the VRA but also to the nation’s broader energy landscape.
The groups contend that dismantling these institutions may result in operational inefficiencies and threaten the stability of power distribution in the country.
Nana Amoasi VII, the Executive Director of IES, emphasized the need for caution, stating, “While the proposed merger and restructuring of Ghana’s power sector may have its proponents, we believe that the risks far outweigh the benefits in its current form.”
He further urged the government to focus on stabilizing and strengthening existing institutions rather than dismantling them.
“We urge the government to reconsider the bill and work towards solutions that preserve Ghana’s energy security, affordability, and long-term sustainability,” Nana Amoasi added in his statement.
