The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Yvonne Attakora Obuobisa, has assured the nation that her office is fully prepared to handle any legal challenges arising from the upcoming 2024 elections.
Speaking at a recent capacity-building workshop for prosecuting attorneys, she emphasized that her team is ready to manage election-related cases, which are often characterized by demonstrations and potential incidents of violence.
“We know that this is an election year. We know that there will be multiple demonstrations.
We are aware that there will be election-related violence cases and the urgency with which they come,” she stated, reaffirming her office’s commitment to maintaining law and order.
Obuobisa highlighted the dedication and readiness of her team, citing their willingness to work around the clock to address election-related cases promptly.
“We are also on duty 24/7. Some of us have been called to attend court on weekends. We have worked deep into the night. We have been recalled from these countless times to attend to emergency cases,” she said, underscoring the demanding nature of their duties.
She pointed out that prosecutors have often had to draft charges under challenging circumstances, sometimes even while on the road, to ensure that justice is served swiftly and efficiently.
The DPP also stressed the importance of handling these cases with professionalism, precision, and urgency.
“Our priorities will be to play our role as prosecutors with honour, decency, accuracy, and also with urgency,” she affirmed.
Obuobisa urged her colleagues to be prepared for the demands of the election period, emphasizing that they must be ready to respond promptly and effectively, even if it means working at odd hours.
