Speaking ahead of the Finance Minister’s budget presentation today, Andrews Tagoe, General Secretary of the General Agriculture Workers Union, stressed the importance of developing Ghana’s agriculture sector for sustainable national growth.
“A country that wants to grow must grow its agriculture industry, else it will become a service country,” Tagoe asserted, highlighting the strategic need for revitalizing production beyond mere farming.
He called for efforts to revive key agricultural products such as cotton and local fruits, emphasizing that production should not only be for export but primarily to feed the nation.
“They must be able to go back and grow our cotton, grow and process our fruits. So it’s not just about production, but production to feed our people,” he added, pointing to the broader economic benefits of a vibrant agriculture industry.
Tagoe’s comments serve as a reminder that sustainable development hinges on strengthening agriculture as a foundational sector, ensuring Ghana can meet domestic food needs and reduce overreliance on services and imports.
