Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has warned officials of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) that they will be held accountable over financial losses linked to the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, August 18, Mr Afenyo-Markin said the Minority would continue to demand explanations over what it considers significant losses incurred under the programme.

He cautioned officials involved in the management of the programme against assuming that they would escape scrutiny, insisting that accountability would eventually follow.

“The Minority will say this firmly and boldly. It doesn’t matter the adjectives you will use to attack our personality. We know that a day of reckoning will come. They should remember that post-regime accountability awaits them,” he said.

His comments come after the International Monetary Fund (IMF), in its August report, disclosed that the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme, implemented through GoldBod, recorded losses exceeding $1.7 billion in 2025.

According to the IMF, the losses represented approximately 1.5% of Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Mr Afenyo-Markin said the Minority would not be intimidated by criticism over its concerns about the programme and would persist in seeking answers from both GoldBod and the government.

He maintained that public officials entrusted with managing state resources must be prepared to account for their decisions, warning that those currently in charge could face scrutiny even after leaving office.

The Minority Leader’s remarks add to growing calls for greater transparency over the financial performance of the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme and the extent of the state’s exposure to the reported losses.
