Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah has firmly ruled out the deployment of military personnel for today’s crucial parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North Constituency.
In a Facebook post, Dr Boamah emphasized that only the Ghana Police Service will be responsible for maintaining security at polling stations.
“There will be no military deployment!” he declared, repeating the assurance multiple times to calm public concerns ahead of the hotly contested election.
The Minister’s assurance comes amid lingering memories of past election-related violence, including the 2019 Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election and the tragic deaths of eight civilians in the 2020 general elections.
Stressing the government’s commitment to peace and democracy, Dr Boamah urged citizens to remain calm and allow the police—whom he described as professionally trained—to do their job.
He further appealed for a peaceful atmosphere at the polls, framing the by-election as a chance to “reset Ghana and create more opportunities” under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.
