The Member of Parliament for Afadjato South, Hon. Frank Afriyie, has called for sustained investment in Ghana’s youth, describing young people as the nation’s greatest asset and the foundation of sustainable development.
Contributing to a motion marking World Population Day 2026 in Parliament, Hon. Afriyie noted that the year’s theme, “Investing in Ghana’s Future Through Healthy, Skilled, and Empowered Young People,” underscores the urgent need for government and development partners to prioritize the well-being, education, and empowerment of the country’s youth.
He referenced the second paragraph of the official statement on the occasion, emphasizing that because people are the cornerstone of sustainable development, significant investments must be made in young people, whose energy, innovation, and potential will determine Ghana’s future strength and prosperity.
Hon. Afriyie further observed that World Population Day draws global attention to pressing demographic challenges, including gender equality, child and maternal mortality, and the effects of overpopulation. He stressed that these issues require coordinated action to ensure inclusive and sustainable national development.
Turning to Ghana’s domestic situation, the Afadjato South MP identified unemployment as one of the country’s most pressing challenges. He warned that the growing rate of youth unemployment is “almost turning into a national security crisis,” citing a youth unemployment rate of 32 percent.
Despite the challenge, Hon. Afriyie commended the government for introducing policies aimed at creating jobs and reducing unemployment, expressing optimism that these initiatives would continue to improve opportunities for young people and contribute to national development.
He concluded by urging continued commitment from all stakeholders to invest in Ghana’s youth, noting that empowering the next generation is essential to securing the country’s long-term growth and prosperity.
