Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of failing to fulfil its key campaign promises while allegedly using the justice system to intimidate members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Addressing supporters during the NPP’s “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration on Thursday, August 6, Afenyo-Markin said the government had failed to deliver on major pledges made before assuming office.
According to him, the NDC promised to implement a 24-hour economy, create jobs through its “one job, three shifts” policy and accelerate national development, but had failed to make good on those commitments after one year and six months in office.
“The NDC came into office promising a 24-hour economy, one job in three shifts, and rapid development. Yet after one year and six months, they have failed to deliver on even one of those major promises. Instead, what we are seeing is an attempt to intimidate the NPP. Our justice system has become selective,” he told the crowd.
The Minority Leader further alleged that the country’s justice system was being applied unfairly against members of the opposition.
“Today, if you are in the NDC, you are free. But if you belong to the NPP, they say you should go to prison,” he claimed.
He urged party supporters not to be intimidated, insisting that the opposition would continue to defend what it considers democratic principles and the rule of law.
“We will not allow that to happen,” Afenyo-Markin declared.
Calling on demonstrators to remain resolute, he encouraged supporters to participate peacefully in the protest while demonstrating the party’s strength and unity.
“So, let us be courageous. Let us demonstrate peacefully and send a clear message that the NPP remains strong, united and resolute,” he said.
The “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration was organised by the NPP to protest what the party describes as political persecution and the selective application of justice under the current administration.
