President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is set to cut the sod for a groundbreaking $450 million manganese processing plant at Nsuta, Western Region, on November 25, 2024.
The highly anticipated project is expected to begin before the end of the year, according to the Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Samuel A. Jinapor.
“We are at the concluding phase of beginning the construction of a refinery here in Nsuta,” Jinapor revealed during his tour of the Ghana Manganese Company (GMC), emphasizing the government’s commitment to transitioning from raw material exports to value addition.
Jinapor highlighted the project as a game-changer for Ghana’s economy, aligning with President Akufo-Addo’s vision of industrializing the mining sector.
He described it as a “major breakthrough,” stating, “Centuries of exporting raw manganese will be a thing of the past.”
The refinery will not only increase employment but also strengthen Ghana’s control over the highest value chains in the manganese industry. With strategic partnerships between Ghana and China, the project is nearing completion, awaiting only parliamentary approval for its fiscal regime.
GMC Managing Director Jurgen Eijgendaal praised the minister’s leadership, sharing that the company is fully prepared for the refinery venture. He noted that GMC is making significant investments to support the project’s success.
The construction of the refinery is expected to unlock numerous economic linkages and cement Ghana’s place in the global manganese market.
