A tragic road accident at Kaase in the Asokwa Municipality of the Ashanti Region has claimed the life of a man after a gas tanker reportedly suffered brake failure while ascending a hill toward Kuwait.
The tanker, bearing registration number GT 5560-16, is said to have lost control and rolled backwards uncontrollably, crashing into vehicles that were stationary in traffic.
Sources indicate that about five vehicles had come to a halt on the stretch at the time of the incident. These included the tanker itself, two commercial minibuses (trotros), and a Toyota Vitz saloon car.
The deceased, identified as Owusu and popularly known as “Wayomi,” was seated in the front seat of one of the trotros directly behind the tanker. A nurse who was driving her mother in the Toyota Vitz was positioned just behind the trotro.
Eyewitnesses say the tanker suddenly began reversing down the slope, ramming into the trotro and the Toyota Vitz. In an attempt to save himself, Mr. Owusu reportedly tried to escape but became trapped beneath the heavy-duty vehicle. He died instantly.
The impact left the affected vehicles badly damaged and caused significant traffic congestion in the area.
Personnel from the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service responded swiftly to the scene. Working alongside other security agencies, they managed the situation, removed the wreckage, and restored the flow of traffic.
The body of the deceased has since been conveyed to the morgue at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
Mr. Owusu is reported to have been married with three children. Investigations into the incident are expected to continue.
