The tragic death of the Mmratehene of the Ayanfuri Traditional Area, Nana Kwabena Okyere, during a funeral ceremony in Ayanfuri has sparked renewed concerns over firearm handling at public gatherings, with Security Consultant Richard Kumadoe calling for stricter gun regulations at festivals and traditional events.

The chief reportedly died after accidentally shooting himself during the final funeral rites of the Ayanfuri Abusuapanin on Saturday, May 9, 2026.

According to reports, Nana Kwabena Okyere was dancing with a pump-action gun at the funeral grounds when the firearm allegedly discharged accidentally, causing severe injuries.

He was rushed to the Ayanfuri Pentecost Hospital for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead while receiving medical care.

His body has since been deposited at the Dunkwa-On-Offin Municipal Hospital mortuary pending preservation and further investigations.

The incident has thrown the Ayanfuri community in the Upper Denkyira West District into mourning, with residents and traditional authorities expressing shock over the sudden death of the chief.

Assembly Member for the area, Castro Kwabena Ennin, described the incident as tragic and heartbreaking for the people of Ayanfuri.

Speaking in an interview on ABC News GH, Security Consultant Richard Kumadoe said the incident should not merely be dismissed as an accident.

“It should not be seen as an accident, it could be a suicidal attempt,” he stated, stressing the need for thorough police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Mr. Kumadoe also called on the Ghana Police Service to tighten control over the use of firearms during public gatherings and traditional ceremonies.

“The police must begin to give accreditation to those who use guns at events and festivals,” he said.

According to him, such measures would help regulate firearm use and prevent avoidable tragedies at social and cultural events.

He further urged traditional leaders to proactively engage security agencies before organizing major ceremonies.

“Traditional leaders shouldn’t wait for trouble before they involve the police,” he advised.

Police have since commenced investigations into the incident as the community continues to mourn the late chief.
