Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, has emerged victorious in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary for the Ayawaso East Constituency, positioning himself as the party’s flagbearer for the upcoming March 3 by-election.

The primary, held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, brought together five aspirants vying for the mandate of party delegates across two voting centres. At the close of polls and collation, Baba Jamal secured a total of 431 votes to clinch the contest.

His closest contender, Hajia Amina Adam, followed with 399 votes, underscoring the keenly fought nature of the race. Mohammed Ramme placed third with 88 votes, while Dr. Yakubu Azindow garnered 45 votes. Mohammed Najib received one vote. The results reflect the combined tallies from the two polling stations used for the exercise.

The primary generated considerable attention within the constituency, not only because of the high stakes attached to the forthcoming by-election but also due to conversations surrounding campaign activities.

During the process, Baba Jamal’s campaign team distributed items including 32-inch television sets and boiled eggs to delegates. He has, however, insisted that these gestures were purely acts of appreciation and goodwill, and not meant to sway the decision of voters.

With the primary now concluded, the focus shifts to the March 3 by-election, where Baba Jamal will lead the NDC’s campaign to retain the Ayawaso East seat.
