Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has inaugurated 1,072 housing units under the Kpone Affordable Housing Project, marking the completion of its first three phases.

During the ceremony on Monday, November 25, 2024, Dr. Bawumia also broke ground for Phase 4 of the initiative, which will deliver an additional 800 units, bringing the total to 1,872 homes.

The project, originally launched in 2006 under former President John Agyekum Kufuor, faced significant delays during subsequent administrations but has been revived under the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government to provide decent homes for Ghanaians.

In his address, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing Ghana’s 1.8 million housing deficit through innovative approaches, including Public-Private Partnerships (PPP).

He proposed a “Decade of Housing Programme” as a long-term solution, stating, “We have seen the impact of the Year of Roads; now we must focus on a decade of housing to tackle the critical need for affordable homes.”

He also highlighted the significance of strengthening Ghana’s mortgage market, noting its crucial role in fostering economic growth and expanding access to homeownership.

The Minister of Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, hailed the project as a landmark achievement, showcasing the government’s resolve to bridge the housing gap.

“Phases 1, 2, and 3 of this transformative project have delivered a remarkable 1,072 housing units. This milestone reflects the exceptional leadership and commitment of all stakeholders,” he stated.

He also noted that since 2017, over 10,000 homes have been delivered through government initiatives, including housing for security personnel.

Ongoing projects such as the completion of the Adenta SHC flats and Saglemi stalled units demonstrate the government’s determination to finish abandoned housing schemes.

Vice President Bawumia also inspected progress on the nearby National Housing Fund (NHF) estates, which are set to add 534 more homes to Ghana’s housing stock.

He reiterated his commitment to building a vibrant housing sector that not only reduces the housing deficit but also creates jobs and spurs economic growth.

Dr. Bawumia assured Ghanaians that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would prioritize housing development in its future agenda, further advancing the nation’s infrastructure and economic resilience.
