Education specialist Divine Kpe has asserted that the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) has lost its original purpose as a certification tool.
According to him, the examination no longer serves to assess and certify the competencies of students at the basic education level, but has instead become a routine requirement for school placement.
Speaking in an interview with ABC News Ghana, Mr. Kpe emphasized the need to restructure the BECE to better reflect its intended educational outcomes and relevance in today’s learning environment.
Mr. Kpe also weighed in on the previously proposed Free SHS Bill, suggesting that coupling Junior High School (JHS) and Senior High School (SHS) into a single, continuous basic education cycle would be more beneficial for student development.
He argued that the current break in the educational structure, marked by the BECE, creates unnecessary psychological and academic pressure on students.
He urged policymakers to consider the long-term educational and developmental needs of students as they deliberate on the Free SHS Bill.
