Ghana’s Black Starlets will miss yet another edition of the FIFA U-17 World Cup after a dramatic 8–7 penalty shootout defeat to Uganda, extending their absence from the global tournament to nine years.

The tense encounter ended 2–2 in regulation time before Uganda held their nerve in a marathon shootout to seal qualification and secure only their second-ever appearance at the tournament, having first qualified in the previous edition.

Early Ghana lead undone by Uganda response

Ghana started brightly and struck first in the ninth minute through emerging talent Eric Gyamfi, who finished clinically after being left unmarked at the back post. His low strike went through the legs of goalkeeper Lukyamuzi to give the Black Starlets an early advantage.

Uganda responded by shifting to a back-three system, a tactical change that quickly shifted momentum in their favour.

The adjustment paid off when captain Owen Mukise unleashed a powerful long-range effort that forced a save from Ghana goalkeeper John Annan. From the resulting corner, Mukise found the net directly to level the score just before halftime.

End-to-end second half drama

Uganda almost took the lead immediately after the restart when John Owino struck the crossbar, narrowly missing what would have been a stunning turnaround.

However, Ghana restored their lead against the run of play when Abdul Latif capitalised on a loose ball inside the box. The goal came after Gyamfi delivered a teasing cross that was cleverly dummied by Clement Agyei, allowing Latif to finish from close range.

Late controversy and penalty equaliser

Drama unfolded in the closing stages when Uganda head coach Laryea Kingston called for a review of a handball incident inside the Ghana penalty area.

After consultation, the referee awarded a penalty after replays showed right-back Nicholas Asumang had handled Mukise’s cross.

Ibanda Arafat converted confidently, sending John Annan the wrong way to level the match and push the game into extra time, which eventually ended without further goals.

Shootout heartbreak for Ghana

In preparation for penalties, Ghana coach Prosper Ogum introduced goalkeeper Michael Armah and defender Mark Mensah late in the game, a tactical move aimed at strengthening the shootout lineup.

But despite the adjustment, Uganda held their nerve in a tense 8–7 penalty decider, edging Ghana in sudden death to book their place at the World Cup.

The result marks another painful chapter for the Black Starlets, who continue to struggle to return to the global stage, while Uganda celebrate a historic and hard-fought qualification.
