The Black Stars of Ghana are set for a challenging assignment against Austria today, with the friendly fixture forming a key part of their build-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The fixture rekindles a long-standing gap between the two nations, who have not met since 2007, when Ghana secured a 1-1 draw through a strike from Sulley Muntari. A victory on Friday would mark Ghana’s first-ever win over Austria.

Austria head coach Ralf Rangnick has already signalled caution, acknowledging the threat posed by the West African side.

“Ghana is a strong team in terms of play, but they also have a certain physicality, athleticism, and dynamism,” he told reporters.

“This is a great test for us because we need to bring our strengths to the field, both physically, tactically, and technically in order to win the game.”

Addo, on his part, remains optimistic about his side’s chances, stressing the unpredictable nature of modern football.

“I think in modern day football, to be honest, everyone can beat everyone.”

“We want to win every match we play, and this is for sure.”

“Now the full focus is on Austria. We saw what they do, we have analysed them well and very hopeful that the players will do it at the end.”

Austria enter the contest in solid form, having recorded three wins, one draw, and one defeat in their last five matches. Their attacking strength has been particularly evident, with 15 goals scored during that period, including an emphatic 10-0 victory over San Marino.

Ghana’s recent form has been mixed. While the Black Stars secured important wins in World Cup qualifiers against Mali, the Central African Republic, and Comoros, they endured a disappointing Asian tour, suffering back-to-back defeats to Japan and South Korea without finding the net.

Despite several high-profile absentees—including Mohammed Kudus, Mohammed Salisu, Inaki Williams, and Ernest Nuamah—the squad still boasts quality and experience.

The return of Thomas Partey, Alexander Djiku, and Fatawu Issahaku is expected to provide stability, while in-form forward Antoine Semenyo offers attacking promise.

Friday’s encounter is expected to provide a crucial benchmark for Ghana as they continue their build-up to the 2026 World Cup, testing both depth and tactical readiness against a well-organised Austrian side.
