Police in Walewale have restored calm after a disruption during the vote-counting process of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Primary rerun for the Walewale Constituency.
The disruption, which led to sporadic disturbances, resulted in the arrest of Kamara Bawah, who allegedly caused damage to several ballot papers.
The suspect is currently in custody, assisting the police with investigations.
Security in the area has been tightened following the incident, with both police and military personnel deployed to ensure order.
Citi News correspondent, Mohammed Aminu Alabira, reported that the election day was marred by further disturbances, including alleged assaults by military personnel at the voting center.
The unrest raised concerns from aspirant Dr. Mahama Tia Kabiru and his team, who had earlier expressed dissatisfaction with the arrangements at the venue.
Sorting and counting, which were expected to be done openly, instead took place behind closed doors, adding to tensions.
Dr. Kabiru voiced his frustration with the electoral process, questioning its transparency and fairness.
His supporter, Mohammed Muniru Janda, claimed that Kabiru appeared to be leading during the initial sorting before the disruption occurred.
Concerns about the security of the ballots and the overall integrity of the election were echoed by several supporters, casting doubt on the legitimacy of the rerun.
