The Ghana Football Association has appointed Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the Black Stars for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The decision, endorsed by the Association’s Executive Council in consultation with key stakeholders, signals a strategic shift towards experience as Ghana prepares for football’s biggest stage.
The former Real Madrid, Manchester United Coach is a seasoned tactician with decades of top-level coaching experience.
Carlos Queiroz is expected to immediately begin preparations for the tournament, which will be hosted across Canada, Mexico, and the United States starting June 11, 2026.
Ghana will open its campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto, before facing heavyweight opponents England and Croatia in what promises to be a challenging group.
The Portuguese coach brings a wealth of World Cup experience to the role, having previously guided multiple national teams on the global stage. His résumé includes leading South Africa to qualification for the 2002 World Cup, steering Portugal to the knockout rounds in 2010, and managing Iran at both the 2014 and 2018 editions of the tournament.
Beyond the World Cup, Queiroz has held coaching roles across several continents, including stints in Egypt, Oman, Japan, and Qatar, further underlining his global pedigree.
His appointment is expected to inject tactical discipline and tournament experience into the Black Stars setup as Ghana seeks to navigate a tough group and make a deep run in the expanded World Cup format.
With time limited before kickoff, attention now shifts to how quickly Queiroz can shape the squad and impose his philosophy ahead of Ghana’s opening fixture in Toronto.
