The Chief Justice of Ghana, Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, has ordered the immediate closure of seven courts within Bawku and surrounding communities, citing safety concerns for judicial staff and court users.

The affected courts include the High Court and Circuit Court in Bolgatanga, as well as District Courts in Bolgatanga, Zuarungu, Zebilla, Garu, and Bongo.

This measure follows months of escalating conflict in the region, attributed to the controversial enskinment of Seidu Abagre as Bawku Naba, a title that has spurred tensions between opposing factions.

The judicial statement, released on Tuesday, October 29, explains that the court closures aim to protect judges, staff, lawyers, and community members.

It notes that the unrest, intensified by Abagre’s disputed leadership, has resulted in numerous clashes, with tragic losses of life—16 deaths to date—underscoring the severity of the situation.

Despite Abagre’s lack of legal recognition, his self-proclaimed title has deepened divisions in the area, straining local peace efforts and affecting public institutions.

“The Honourable Lady Chief Justice has ordered the closure of the following courts with immediate effect, until further notice,” stated the Judicial Secretary in the release.

The statement also directed court registrars to secure all court assets and advised judicial staff to prioritize their personal safety.
