A young boy has been found dead inside a commercial minibus, commonly known as a trotro, in Alajo following severe flooding that struck parts of Accra after Monday’s heavy downpour.
The vehicle was reportedly discovered lodged in a gutter on Wednesday after floodwaters in the area began to recede. Residents who inspected the stranded minibus made the grim discovery of the child’s lifeless body inside.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the identity of the victim, and the exact circumstances that led to the boy becoming trapped in the vehicle remain unclear. Investigations are expected to determine how the incident occurred.
The discovery adds to the rising death toll linked to the widespread flooding that affected several communities across the Greater Accra Region, submerging homes, roads, and businesses and disrupting daily life.
On Tuesday, Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak informed Parliament that at least 12 people had died as a result of the floods, while seven others were still missing as of that morning.
He further noted that the disaster had displaced 7,761 households and affected more than 38,000 people nationwide. The torrential rainfall, he explained, overwhelmed drainage systems, leading to extensive inundation in multiple areas.
Emergency response teams and disaster management officials are continuing assessments and rescue efforts in affected communities as they work to account for missing persons and support displaced families.
The latest tragedy in Alajo underscores the human cost of the flooding disaster, which has left several communities grappling with loss and destruction while recovery efforts continue.
