The Winneba Municipal Hospital has confirmed the deaths of two children following a surge in cholera cases in the Effutu Municipality.
The outbreak, which has hit fishing communities along the coast, has resulted in 356 suspected cases, with 29 confirmed.
Head of Medical Supervision at the hospital, Dr. Douglas Amponsah, disclosed that 15 patients are currently receiving treatment, with 10 in critical condition.
He warned that “most of the cases are coming from members of similar families,” with children being the most affected group.
Authorities have instituted emergency measures to contain the outbreak and treat affected individuals.
However, concerns remain high as the Effutu Municipality has now become a cholera hotspot, similar to Ajumako, Agona West, and Ekumfi in the Central Region. Health officials have urged residents to prioritize hygiene and sanitation while seeking medical care at the earliest signs of infection.
In response to the crisis, the National Democratic Congress’s Parliamentary Candidate for the Effutu Constituency, James Kofi Annan, has donated essential supplies to the municipal hospital to support the treatment of patients.
Annan also pledged to push for the relocation of refuse sites in coastal communities and other long-term interventions to improve sanitation.
His intervention comes amid growing calls for authorities to address poor waste management, which has been identified as a key contributor to the outbreak.
With the situation worsening, health professionals and community leaders are calling for urgent action to prevent further loss of lives.
