American singer Chris Brown has been handed an eight-month suspended prison sentence in the United Kingdom for attacking music producer Abraham Diaw with a tequila bottle at a London nightclub in 2023.
The 37-year-old was sentenced at Southwark Crown Court on Monday, October 26, after pleading guilty to a charge of affray in July. The sentence has been suspended for 12 months, meaning he will not serve time in prison unless he commits another offence during that period.

The incident occurred at Tape nightclub in London on February 19, 2023, where Brown struck Diaw twice on the head with a bottle before swinging it at him twice more. Prosecutors described the incident as “a vicious and unprovoked attack” that lasted approximately 20 seconds.
During the sentencing, Judge Tony Baumgartner described the incident as “serious, public violence”, highlighting the repeated use of the bottle and the risk of more serious injuries in the crowded venue.
“Your fame, commercial success and professional standing do not entitle you to special treatment – the law applies equally to everyone,” the judge told Brown.
Brown had previously denied more serious charges, including attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm with intent and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, before pleading guilty to the lesser charge of affray.
His vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, 40, who was also involved in the incident, received a four-month suspended prison sentence. Akinlolu had pleaded guilty to the same charge.
The Metropolitan Police said the sentence followed an investigation into the attack, with Detective Chief Superintendent Christina Jessah stressing that violence would not be tolerated regardless of an individual’s public profile.
“Violence will not be accepted on the streets of London,” she said. “Regardless of an individual’s profile or status, we will pursue those responsible and work tirelessly to bring them before the courts.”
Brown’s lawyer, Sallie Bennett-Jenkins, told the court that the singer was profoundly sorry for the incident, describing him as “a dedicated, loving and loyal father to four children”.
“This was an ugly and unattractive incident, we would be the first to accept,” she added. “It was, however, an incident that was very short-lived.”
Brown thanked the judge after the sentence was announced before leaving the courtroom, where supporters had gathered to witness the proceedings. Fans outside the court cheered as he departed in a waiting car.
The singer was arrested in May 2025 after returning to the UK for the first time since the incident. He was initially denied bail but was later released after agreeing to pay a £5 million security fee, allowing his international tour to proceed.
The latest case adds to Brown’s history of legal troubles involving violence. In 2009, he pleaded guilty to assaulting his then-girlfriend, singer Rihanna, and received five years’ probation. He has also faced other assault-related proceedings in the United States.
Despite the controversies, Brown remains a commercially successful R&B performer, having sold tens of millions of records worldwide and won Grammy Awards for Best R&B Album in 2011 and 2025.
Brown is scheduled to return to the stage on November 5 when his R&B tour with fellow singer Usher resumes at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
