The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has secured a High Court order authorising the arrest of Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, as part of an ongoing investigation.
The court has also granted EOCO permission to search for and seize documents believed to be relevant to the investigation.
However, the court directed that any attempt to arrest the MP should be carried out through the Speaker of Parliament.
EOCO had approached the court for the orders after telling the court that its attempts to obtain the MP’s voluntary attendance for questioning had not been successful.
The anti-graft agency also raised concerns that documents relevant to the investigation could be hidden, altered or destroyed if the requested orders were not granted.
The development comes a week after an attempted arrest of Mr Baffour Awuah by EOCO officials at the Accra High Court on September 23.
EOCO subsequently stated that the attempted arrest was linked to an investigation for which the MP had been invited on two occasions in February 2026.
Mr Baffour Awuah has disputed EOCO’s account, particularly regarding his cooperation with the investigation.
He explained that the matter concerns SIC Life Savings and Loans Company, which had previously engaged his former law firm, Sarkodie Baffour Awuah & Partners.
According to him, following EOCO’s February invitations, he referred the matter to the Clerk to Parliament.
He said a representative of his former law firm subsequently appeared before EOCO investigators on March 4, March 18 and April 30 and provided information requested by the investigators, including a written statement.
The case is connected to financial transactions involving SIC Life Savings and Loans and Equity Savings and Loans.
Mr Baffour Awuah said SIC Life Savings and Loans had engaged his former firm to recover about GH¢3.5 million it had invested with Equity Savings and Loans.
He explained that the investment, together with accrued interest, eventually amounted to about GH¢14 million before the parties reached a negotiated settlement.
EOCO has not publicly provided full details of the investigation or disclosed the specific allegations being examined.
The latest court order now gives EOCO the legal authority to arrest the MP and search for and seize documents relevant to the ongoing investigation, subject to the court’s directive that the arrest be executed through the Speaker of Parliament.
