A total of eight individuals, comprising four elementary students, one teacher, and three members of the community, are currently grappling with severe injuries sustained from the collapse of a school building at the Sukrung Awemfi DA primary school in the Upper West Akim District, Eastern Region.
These individuals were participating in or observing the ongoing Domeabra Zonal Inter School Sports when heavy rain forced them to seek shelter in the school building.
Unfortunately, the deteriorating state of the school building proved hazardous as it collapsed, trapping the victims underneath the debris. The collapse primarily affected three classrooms designated for classes one to three.
Prompt rescue efforts by teachers and local residents facilitated the swift evacuation of the injured individuals, who were promptly transported to the Adeiso District Hospital for urgent medical attention. As of now, they are undergoing treatment, battling life-threatening injuries resulting from the collapse.
“We were having our sports this week, it was raining, so they had to seek shelter in that dilapidated classroom. Unfortunately, it fell on them. We have written severally to the MP and DCE to fix that school, but we haven’t had favourable response.” Domeabra Zonal Vice Chairman, John Priestly Badu stated’
“We are with the victims at the Adeiso District Hospital, they are receiving care, it is a serious situation.” he added.
