The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has confirmed that its officers attempted to arrest Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, as part of an ongoing investigation.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, EOCO said it had taken note of a video circulating on social media showing a confrontation involving its officers and the MP.
The Office said Baffour Awuah had previously been invited twice in February 2026 to assist with the investigation but did not honour the invitations.
According to EOCO, it subsequently took steps to secure his attendance in accordance with the law, leading to Wednesday’s attempted arrest.
The arrest, however, was not completed after the situation escalated.
EOCO said its officers assessed that taking further action at the scene could have endangered public safety and therefore did not proceed with the arrest.
The Office also said it had identified two persons who, based on the circumstances captured in the video, allegedly intervened to facilitate the MP’s escape.
EOCO said the conduct of the two individuals was being assessed and that it would take any lawful action deemed appropriate.
The Office further acknowledged that Baffour Awuah subsequently went to the precincts of Parliament to seek sanctuary, although Parliament is currently on recess.
EOCO said it recognises and respects the constitutional privileges and immunities of Members of Parliament and would conduct its operations in accordance with the Constitution and applicable laws.
It stressed, however, that membership of Parliament does not by itself bring an investigation to an end or place an individual beyond the reach of the law.
“At the same time, EOCO will not take any step that is inconsistent with parliamentary privilege or any other protection provided by the Constitution,” the Office said.
EOCO said the investigation remains active and that it will review the circumstances surrounding Wednesday’s incident, including available video evidence, before determining its next steps.
The incident occurred after proceedings at the Accra High Court involving detained nurse Salomey Baffoe Awiti, whom Baffour Awuah represents as counsel. Reports from the court said the confrontation occurred after the hearing of her bail application.
The bail application was subsequently adjourned to Thursday, September 24, after the prosecution requested more time to respond.
EOCO said it remains committed to discharging its statutory responsibilities while respecting the Constitution, the rule of law and the institutional privileges of Parliament.
