President of the Food and Beverages Association of Ghana (FABAG), John Awuni has called for the removal of duties on foodstuffs throughout the festive season.
Speaking to ABC News Ghana on September 17, 2024, Mr. Awuni emphasized that eliminating these duties could significantly lower food prices, providing relief to consumers and helping businesses recover from the financial strains of the past year.
Mr. Awuni highlighted a past intervention by the Kufuor-led administration that successfully reduced duties, leading to noticeable price drops.
He argued that a similar approach now could facilitate a more affordable Christmas for all and support struggling businesses.
This measure is seen as crucial for easing the economic pressures on consumers during the holiday season.
Reflecting on the year’s challenges, Mr. Awuni lamented the severe losses endured by the food and beverages sector, attributing the issues primarily to the depreciation of the cedi.
He expressed hope that stabilizing the exchange rate would allow businesses to recover their losses and help restore balance to the market.
