Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has revealed that starting December 1, 2024, the government will provide free dialysis treatment for all kidney patients under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
This announcement was made during a stakeholder meeting in the Old Tafo Pankrono Constituency, where Dr. Bawumia reiterated the administration’s commitment to easing the healthcare burdens faced by Ghanaians.
The new policy builds on a pilot program introduced earlier this year, which offered free dialysis to patients over 60 and under 18.
Dr. Bawumia noted that the NHIS had been revived through significant investments and has already expanded coverage to include treatments for childhood cancer and sickle cell disease.
Highlighting the high costs of dialysis, he said, “Dialysis has become expensive, and a lot of patients are unable to pay for the treatment. From December 1, all patients will receive free treatment under the NHIS.”
This initiative aims to alleviate the financial strain on patients and their families, who often find it challenging to afford regular dialysis sessions.
Dr. Bawumia’s announcement comes as part of his 15-day tour of the Ashanti Region, where he is also rallying support ahead of the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections on December 7.
