Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Ocloo has declared a firm stance against scrap dealers who have returned to the Old Agbogbloshie site, years after its demolition.
“We won’t allow a return to chaos,” she warned, noting that the area cleared in 2021 to improve sanitation and reclaim public land has once again become a hotspot for illegal dumping and unregulated activity.
She stressed that the government will not hesitate to take decisive action to restore order and maintain the integrity of the redevelopment efforts.
The clampdown aligns with ongoing efforts by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), which has launched “Operation Red Line” to address congestion and street trading in the Central Business District.
Led by Chief Executive Michael Kpakpo Allotey, the campaign involves painting red lines on pavements to delineate zones strictly for pedestrian use and organized trading.
Unauthorized vendors and structures encroaching on public walkways are being removed as part of a wider plan to decongest the city and improve sanitation.
During a recent inspection at Circle Neoplan Station, Mr. Allotey reaffirmed the AMA’s commitment to the campaign, pledging to provide permanent trading spaces for street hawkers within two months.
“This is not just about enforcement it’s about offering sustainable alternatives,” he said.
