The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has commenced a mass cholera vaccination campaign in the Western Region.
The vaccination which began on Sunday, December 15, targets over 600,000 residents across four Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) heavily affected by the outbreak.
The campaign, which runs until Thursday, December 19, is a response to the alarming rise in cholera cases in the Western and Central Regions.
To date, the Western Region alone has recorded 908 confirmed cases and 10 fatalities across eight MMDAs.
Key areas covered by the campaign include the Shama Municipality, Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, Ahanta West, and Effia-Kwesimintsim.
Residents aged two and above are eligible for the vaccination, except for pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers.
Vaccination teams have been deployed to critical locations such as churches, mosques, markets, schools, and homes to ensure maximum reach, particularly in high-risk communities.
This initiative follows the success of Ghana’s first sub-national cholera vaccination campaign in the Awutu Senya East sub-districts, which ran from November 30 to December 3 and exceeded its target of 150,000 people.
