A late-night fire outbreak swept through a section of the Nima Market in Accra on Monday, May 11, 2026, destroying several wooden structures and their contents.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the distress call was received at approximately 10:38 p.m., prompting an immediate response from firefighters.
The first firefighting crew from the National Headquarters, led by Assistant Divisional Officer Grade I (ADO I) Ahoni, arrived at the scene at 10:48 p.m. and encountered a rapidly spreading fire.
With support from personnel from the Circle and Parliament Fire Stations, firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control at 11:21 p.m. The fire was fully extinguished at about 1:44 a.m. on Tuesday.
Preliminary investigations by the GNFS suggest that the fire may have been caused by an electrical fault.
The incident destroyed ten wooden structures and their contents. However, firefighters were able to salvage several adjoining structures, preventing the fire from spreading further across the market.
Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were recorded during the incident.
The GNFS also commended personnel from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Police Service for their operational support throughout the firefighting exercise.
