Energy and Green Transition Minister, John Abdulai Jinapor, has revealed that the government has commenced the importation of electric vehicles (EVs) for public institutions in a bold step to reduce the country’s dependence on fossil fuels and ease the burden of rising fuel expenditure.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Tuesday, July 16, the minister described the initiative as both an environmental and economic necessity.
“We launched our EV promotion programme, which will depend on solar for charging,” he stated.
“As part of government efforts, we are importing EV vehicles for government operations.”
According to the minister, the new direction forms a key component of Ghana’s green transition strategy aimed at lowering carbon emissions while addressing the growing pressure on the state’s fuel allowance budget for government appointees and institutions.
Mr. Jinapor further disclosed that the ministry is developing a five-phase implementation module, which will serve as a national blueprint for the full and effective integration of electric vehicles into government operations.
