Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi and Ranking Member on Parliament’s Economy and Development Committee, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has accused the government of manipulating economic data to create a false impression of progress.
According to him, some figures being presented by government are packaged with narratives designed to convince Ghanaians that the economy is performing better than the realities on the ground.
Speaking on ABC In the Morning on Thursday, July 23, 2026, Mr Oppong Nkrumah said the opposition has taken up the responsibility of analysing government’s economic figures and presenting what he described as the actual situation to the public.
“We see that the government is manufacturing numbers, and they put a line on the number to tell you that everything is fine, and if you do not know any better, you might be tempted to begin swallowing those headlines they are manufacturing,” he said.
The Ranking Member explained that his committee and other stakeholders scrutinise government data by removing what he described as political narratives attached to the figures to provide a clearer picture of economic performance.
“Looking at that data, all that we do is, we bring those data back to the government, and strip it off the headlines and narrative, and show the fact to both government and the people of Ghana,” he stated.
He added that their role goes beyond criticism, as they also provide alternative policy proposals based on their assessment of the economy.
“We don’t just end there, we also give alternative propositions,” he added.
Mr Oppong Nkrumah’s comments come ahead of the government’s presentation of the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review, where the Finance Minister is expected to provide an update on the implementation of the approved annual budget and the state of the economy.
The former Information Minister has consistently called for transparency in the presentation and interpretation of economic data, urging Ghanaians to critically assess government claims on economic performance.
