The Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Education Committee, Dr. Clement Apaak, has revealed that the government has issued a GH¢25 million cheque to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
This payment follows concerns raised by WAEC regarding the potential delay in the release of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results due to an outstanding GH¢118 million debt.
Speaking on Eyewitness News, Dr. Apaak acknowledged the GH¢25 million payment but emphasized that it is insufficient to address WAEC’s financial challenges.
“The information we are receiving is that the government has issued a cheque for GH¢25 million to WAEC, but we are talking about an amount of GH¢118 million, and so when you give only GH¢25 million, clearly this is not even half of the debt. It is a drop in the ocean,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, John Kapi, confirmed that the GH¢25 million payment is crucial for repairing faulty scanners used to mark objective questions.
Speaking in an interview, Kapi explained that the funds would be used to pay technicians to repair the equipment, which is vital for the timely release of the WASSCE results.
