The Member of Parliament for Akim Oda, Hon. Alexander Akwasi Acquah, has accused the government of politicising the procurement of new aircraft for the Ghana Armed Forces, suggesting that this contributed to the recent fatal helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight officers.
Speaking during the national mourning period for the “Galant 8,” the MP argued that, while in opposition, the current administration failed to support efforts by the previous government to acquire a new fleet for the military despite clear security needs.
Hon. Acquah recalled that the late Minister of Defence, in less than six months in office, initiated moves to procure new aircraft but stressed that such efforts could have been supported much earlier if politics had not taken precedence.
“Politics is on the head in this discussion,” he lamented.
He further commended the late Omane Boamah for taking steps towards fleet renewal, adding that the Ghana Armed Forces must be adequately equipped to defend the country against external threats.
According to the MP, the politicisation of critical security procurements has long-term consequences for national safety and stability. He urged all political actors to place national interest above partisanship when matters of defence and security arise.
“As a country, we need to pay attention to these issues,” he emphasised, warning that delays in replacing aging military equipment endanger both personnel and the nation at large.
