The Ghana Scholarships Secretariat has confirmed the release of $1 million by the government to help clear arrears owed to the University of Memphis, where a number of Ghanaian students are facing the risk of scholarship termination, eviction, and potential deportation.

The announcement comes amid growing concern over the students’ welfare in the United States.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, the Registrar of the Secretariat, Alex Kwaku Asafo-Agyei, disclosed that $400,000 has already been paid, and the newly approved $1 million is being processed for transfer.

He assured that efforts are on track to avoid any negative consequences for the affected students. “Ghanaian students will not be deported, I give you that assurance,” he said.

Mr. Asafo-Agyei further explained that although the total amount owed is $3.6 million, only part of it will be paid now due to an ongoing audit.

“We owe them $3.6 million in total, and we have paid $400,000 so far. We are now processing a $1 million payment,” he noted, adding that the funds are currently with the Controller and Accountant General’s Department, awaiting movement through the Bank of Ghana and onward to Washington for final settlement.
