The Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS), in collaboration with the GSTS Alumni Association, has honored the legacies of Prof. N. K. Kumapley, Dr. K. Y. Amoako, and Prof. K. A. Andam during the school’s Anniversary Founders’ Day Distinguished Alumni Lecture.

The event, held on 9th August 2025 as part of GSTS’s 116th Anniversary celebrations, brought together an impressive gathering of dignitaries, alumni, students, faculty, and friends of the school from across Ghana and around the world.

The atmosphere was charged with pride, camaraderie, and an unmistakable sense of heritage as attendees celebrated the school’s remarkable journey since its founding in 1909.

Gt. Prof. George W. K Intsiful ’70/H3 delivering the Keynote Address

Delivering the keynote lecture, Gt. Professor George W.K. Intsiful ’70/H3 spoke passionately on the theme “Advancing Educational Excellence: 116 Years of GSTS Impact and Growth in Ghana.”

He traced the school’s history of producing leaders who blend technical expertise with ethical values and challenged both alumni and students to embrace innovation, discipline, and service in building Ghana’s future.

His address was met with standing ovations and will be remembered as a rallying call for unity and purposeful action among Giants everywhere.

The highlight of the programme was the recognition of three distinguished alumni whose legacies continue to inspire generations of Giants:

Gt. Professor Nicholas Kwasi Kumapley ’58/H6 — was a pioneering engineer at the Faculty of Engineering of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

The academic whose contributions to infrastructure development and technical education remain unmatched.

In recognition of his legacy, an auditorium at the Faculty of Engineering, the Kumapley Auditorium, was named in his honor.

Gt. Dr. K.Y. Amoako ’63/65/H6 is a globally respected economist and development strategist who has shaped policy and governance across AfricaHe is the Founding President of the African Centre for Economic Transformation (established in 2008).

Dr. Amoako’s distinguished career includes his tenure at the World Bank, where he worked from 1974 and served as the Bank’s Director for Education and Social Policy from 1992 to 1995.

Gt. Professor Kwesi Akwansah Andam ’65/67/H1 — A celebrated engineer, educator, and former Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, remembered for his leadership and scholarly excellence. Prof. Andam is the architect of the Collegiate System at KNUST, a model that has since been adopted by higher education institutions across Ghana.

Family representatives of each honouree accepted commemorative awards on their behalf, expressing gratitude to the GAA and GSTS for preserving their memory and inspiring the current generation.
With the resounding success of this inaugural lecture, the GAA has set the stage for the Founders’ Day Distinguished Alumni Lecture to become a flagship annual event — a platform to honour the past, engage the present, and inspire the future.

As the sun set over the Takoradi coastline, the words of the school anthem rang out from the auditorium — a reminder that wherever Giants may go, they will always stand tall in loyalty, excellence, and service to their alma mater.
