The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, on Friday, April 25, officially inaugurated the Governing Council of the University of Ghana in a ceremony held in Accra.
The newly sworn-in 18-member council is chaired by former Attorney General Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew and has been charged with steering the university’s academic and infrastructural development agenda.
During the inauguration, Minister Iddrisu revealed that the government will this year operationalise the long-awaited National Research Fund, aimed at boosting research capacity in Ghana’s tertiary institutions.
He disclosed that GHC50 million has already been earmarked to support this initiative.
He also urged the council to explore legitimate public-private partnerships to expand the university’s infrastructure both academic and residential to accommodate a growing student population and enhance learning outcomes.
