Government Spokesperson Julius Kwame Anthony has warned that the NDC government will not tolerate the continued practice of increasing transport fares during rush hours, describing it as an indignity that compounds the suffering of commuters amid Accra’s worsening traffic congestion.

Speaking on ABC In the Morning on Friday, January 16, 2025, Mr. Anthony said public transportation must serve the broader goal of keeping the country productive rather than exploiting commuters at peak hours.

“The NDC government will not allow this indignity to continue,” he stated, referring to the frequent rush-hour fare hikes imposed by some private transport operators.

According to him, government expects private transport corporations to act in the national interest by showing restraint and fairness in fare pricing, particularly during periods of heavy commuter demand.

“If the private transport corporations don’t look at this situation from the perspective of getting the country working and do right by the people of Ghana, government will have no choice than to compete them out of the market,” Mr. Anthony warned.

He acknowledged that Accra’s traffic congestion remains a complex, multilayered problem driven by urban growth, infrastructure deficits, and transport management challenges. However, he stressed that the immediate concern is the hardship commuters face daily.

“The problem is multilayered, but in the meantime, we are dealing with indignity. Commuters are suffering,” the Government Spokesperson said.

Mr. Anthony called on the public to exercise patience as the Ministry of Transport works on long-term solutions to address congestion and improve public transport efficiency in the capital.

“Let’s give the Transport Minister some time to fix the challenge,” he urged, assuring commuters that government is committed to restoring dignity, fairness, and order to the public transport system.
