The presidential candidate of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), Akua Donkor, has staunchly defended the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, amidst growing tensions following the disqualification of several presidential candidates ahead of the 2024 elections.
In an interview with Accra-based Kasapa FM, Donkor emphasized that Mrs. Mensa’s actions are not motivated by personal bias but by her commitment to upholding Ghana’s electoral laws.
“Jean Mensa doesn’t hate anyone, but you have to do what is required of you to avoid any issues with her,” she stated, affirming the EC Chair’s impartiality in her role.
Madam Donkor further lauded Mrs. Mensa’s dedication to the integrity of the electoral process, urging political parties to follow the rules set by the Electoral Commission.
“The EC is like Ghana’s God because it is the Commission that determines who qualifies to contest elections,” she remarked, underscoring the significant responsibility of the EC in safeguarding the nation’s democracy.
Donkor reiterated that compliance with the electoral guidelines was paramount for all candidates, stressing that Jean Mensa’s role is divinely ordained.
“God gave us Jean Mensa, so if the Electoral Commission asks me to do something, that is exactly what I will do,” she added.
Her comments come in the wake of the EC’s decision to disqualify 11 presidential candidates after conducting a thorough examination of their nomination forms.
While the Commission has assured those disqualified that their filing fees will be refunded, some of the affected candidates have opted to challenge the decision in court.
Others are also pursuing legal action against the EC.
